2018 is poised to be a ground-breaking year for many of us. This is because all of the work we put into 2017 wasn’t in vain. What we need now is to a clear headspace and a laser-focus to keep us on the right footing. Where will you be this time next year? Whether you have a vision board or a business plan, starting new habits and breaking old ones will be key to hitting the goals you’ve set. Curbing the stuff that isn’t necessarily bad, but certainly distracting will help with accountability. Here are some ways to see concrete wins this year.
Refresh your daily routine
Is the new year’s resolution feeling too lofty already? Take a step back, and try tweaking the goal you made to eat only vegetables and lean protein this quarter to simply adding spinach or kale to your favorite dish and limiting the sugars to recommended servings. How about changing the first thing you do in morning from checking social media to having a cup of coffee and sitting in silence with your thoughts for 10 minutes before starting your day? What can you repeat daily and build on for the next few months that makes you feel good?
Identify new places to meet interesting people
Relationships are the lifeblood of a quality lifestyle. No new friends? Perhaps not, but new colleagues and customers can mean the difference between success and failure on your balance sheet this year. Search upcoming events with local trade organizations or check in with your local community calendars. You can always jump on the TimeOut magazine website for local listings of fun or cool happenings right under your nose. Take a friend or promise yourself that you’ll make at least one new connection at your next outing.
Review your time budget
This brings me to my next point. You can’t better manage your time if you don’t know where it’s currently going. Review your task lists and assign how much time you put into them or plan to put into them. Often times after an exercise like this, we find ourselves working on things that would take longer than the amount of hours we have in a day let alone a week. Shave off the things that can wait and make sure to include important things like rest and recreation.
Harness the power of “no”
You can’t enjoy “yes” if you never say “no”. Leave room for spontaneity. Some of the best opportunities may come at the busiest times in your schedule. If you’re flexible and haven’t committed to nine different things under the sun next week, then you make room to seize and capitalize on unexpected moments.
Keep your mental health a priority
Clarity is vital. Life moves at lightning speeds so having a good amount of organized brain space will help you make decisions quickly and confidently. Take mental breaks and make sure you’re eating well and exercising for 30 minutes every day. Practice “de-stressing” activities weekly (even when you’re feeling great) to maintain your optimal performance levels.
This is your year to shine. Stay nimble and open to the opportunities headed your way.
On to the wine...
Tierra Y Mar Russian River Syrah 2014
This was one of my fave Syrah’s in 2017. You can put away a few bottles till 2019 or crack one open with the rack of lamb dinner you’ve planned for next week. There are tons of black cherry and blueberry aromas with hints of black pepper on the mid-palate. Yum!
